Right on the border between Putnam and Marion township lies the Gilkes Cemetery. The original incorporation date was 17 March 1851. This is the northeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section 5 of Putnam Township.

The land was purchased from the Gilkes family and thus the name. This cemetery is very nicely maintained, and only a few damaged stones were evident when I filmed it earlier this summer. The images from this filming will be uploaded sometime this winter 1999-2000, I hope, God willing.

Many of the residents of Marion Township are buried at this site including a number of people of English ancestry.

The DAR came through the county in the 1940's and transcribed many cemeteries into three volumes with three indexes and they were compiled them into one index which I used as a basis to start a new table and then added more names and the actual names of the cemeteries which are then linked to the individual cemetery pages. I was told that the cemetery section was very time consuming and there were too many page changes, so I redid it.
