This cemetery located in Hartland Township in the southwest corner of the southeast quarter of Section 18 began in about 1835 by members of the Brophy family. There are some of the earliest burials in the county in this cemetery even though it has been abandoned.
The original church planned for this site was moved later to Oceola Township where it is today known as St. John's Church of Oceola Township.
While most of the bodies were moved to the present site of the current St. John's cemetery, some families requested that their loved ones not be moved. The property was transferred to the Lansing Diocese in 1938. The property except for the cemetery was sold in 1945. The last burial there was in 1905.
I recently filmed this cemetery and those images will be uploaded probably during the winter of 2004-2005????. Finally on the mend and will be able to get these done.
